Kundalini Yoga is a specific kind of Yoga. Yoga means union of body, mind and spirit. This is what most of us are after: at our work and in our life: to keep the connection to our inner selves answell as to the "universe" and project this pure self to the surroundings. To live like that is to use our full potential.

In yoga there is a saying "happiness is our birthright". But life often distracts us from happiness and instead of feeling connected with our "souls" and the universe, we get into emotions such as stress, fear, anger, frustration etc. Yoga is designed to bring you back to your inner core.

There are many kinds of yoga. I am most fond of Kundalini Yoga because of the following qualities:

- Unlike many other yoga forms, you don´t have to be very flexible to do Kundalini Yoga. Not that the exercises are all easy, you still get a healthy workout. But its a very democratic yoga form - anyone can do it and get something out of it.

- Unlike most other yoga forms, you don´t have to spend an hour on a regular
basis to feel an effect. You can actually make an immediate difference with a 1-3 minute exercise. This is why Kundalini Yoga is perfectly suited for modern busy people.

- According to ancient yoga scriptures, it is the most effective yogaform there is. It is said that with Kundalini Yoga, you can achieve in one year what takes 18 years with Hatha-yoga. Thats why the techniques - considered too powerful by the elite to spread to the masses - used to be kept secret, and were only revealed to a selected few Masters of other yoga forms until Master Yogi Bhajan brought the techniques to USA in 1969.

- Kundalini Yoga works so effectively because it combines three things that are most often separate: breath, physical exercise and mental focus. It is based on a study of the biochemistry of the brain and body.

- The purpose of Kundalini Yoga is to take the energy that is stored around the pelvis (Kundalini energy) and pump it up, so that it spreads to the entire system and all parts of the body and brain benefit from it. This way, we can gain acces to our full potential. - In spite of Kundalini Yoga being so effective, it is not dangerous, as the exercises prepare the body carefully for the rise of the powerful Kundalini energy.

This article about the popularity of Kundalini Yoga being the "Fastest Growing Yoga in Swedish Corporations"
- on how SAS and 150 other Scandinavian corporations have benefitted from incorporating these techniques as a popular tool against stress in the workplace - was written by Gôran Boll, a renowned researcher and kundalini instructor in Sweden.


Stress is becoming a major health problem in Sweden. More and more people stay home on long-term sick leave owing to stress and burnout. Not a week goes by without stress creating major headlines in the newspapers or news features on TV.

To fight this, various holistic disciplines like yoga, meditation, tai chi and qi-gong have become more widespread than ever before. Yoga in general, and Kundalini Yoga in particular, is becoming increasingly more popular as a tool against stress in today´s Swedish Society.

Today, Kundalini Yoga is the fastest growing form of yoga in Sweden. But it hasn´t always been like that in this country. We have taught Kundalini Yoga in Sweden only since the middle of the 1980s. Before that hatha yoga was in sole prominence. The first Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training in Sweden started in 1993.

Five years ago, when I talked about taking Kundalini Yoga to the workplaces of the corporate society in Sweden, not that many people thought it would work. In the fall of 1995, I formed a small company, LIFEFORCE (www.lifeforce.nu), and started offering Kundalini Yoga to a number of large companies. The Scandinavian Airline System signed up as my first customer offering Kundalini Yoga as a form of stress release to its flying personnel. The first corporate Kundalini Yoga course started there in February 1996.
By early 2001, more than 150 of Sweden´s largest and most well-known workplaces, companies, organizations, and various government agencies have in one way or another introduced Kundalini Yoga to personnel and management. More than 10.000 Swedes have attended introductions, workshops, and weekly classes for stress release at their place of work - and they love it!

We have the major airlines, banks, insurance companies, heavy industry, advertisement agencies, pharmaceutical companies, TV stations, computer and electronics companies, hospitals, postal and tax authorities, schools, theaters, phone companies, various local city governments, and many others, all doing Kundalini Yoga and embracing it wholeheartedly.

In December 200, the Scandinavian Airlines System concluded their tenth consecutive semester with Kundalini Yoga classes at their headquarters outside of Stockholm.
Several workplaces have also introduced Kundalini Yoga to top management. Two examples are:

The managing director of the Red Cross hospital in Stockholm said after three semesters of weekly Kundalini Yoga classes in the hospital: "This is the best-spent hour of the entire week!"

And Eva Rakhonen, Assistant to the President of Philips Electronics in Stockholm said, "During these last few years we have in various ways evaluated the effects of stress and burnout among our employees at Philips in Sweden, and the decision to actively work with a wideranged health program within the corporation has been made. This is a program very much in line with our overall corporate philosophy, a program that we at Philips take very seriously. We are now doing our second semester of Kundalini Yoga here at Philips HQ and it is a huge success. "On a personal level, I think Kundalini Yoga is great. It makes me feel very good - focused, highly concentrated, and at the same time deeply relaxed and energetic".

In late 1998, after the general elections in Sweden, I got a call from the Parliament. They wanted Kundalini Yoga for the Members of Parliament. So in the spring of 1999 I first did a 10 week course in the Parliament with some 30 Members of Parliament, and they liked it so much they immediately booked another consecutive 10 weeks.

The scientific community in Sweden is also showing a growing interest in yoga. In 1998, I participated in the first serious scientific research project ever in Scandinavia involving Kundalini Yoga. The Karolinska Institute (very prestigious, and partly responsible for electing Nobel Prize Winners every year) contacted me, wanting to do a pilot study with Kundalini Yoga for chronic spinal problems. Twenty-seven patients on sick leave did Kundalini Yoga for 6 months (mainly the basic spinal series), and the results were significant. I quote from the report:

"Significant differences between the intervention group and the control group were obtained for pain, quality of sleep and emotional distress. Pain intensity, measured with the pain diary, differed significantly between intervention and control group at post-treatment and at six months follow-up. All of the differences were to the benefit of the intervention group. Sick-listing also decreased to a higher extent in the intervention group than in the control group, however not significantly.

"Conclusion: The results indicate that yoga, in the form it has been employed in the intervention, can be used for alleviation of spinal pain conditions that lead to periods of sick-listing".

The same year, 1998, I led another study, with Kundalini Yoga for chronic sleeping disorder. Twelve employees at a local city government south of Stockholm participated. They did a short set for better sleep for six weeks and also kept sleeping diaries. Seventy-seven percent of the participants showed significantly better sleeping habits after six weeks of Kundalini Yoga. The worse case was a woman who had not slept one full night in 25 years. After about three weeks of Kundalini Yoga she started to sleep every night- and still today, two years later, she sleeps like a baby every night.

Currently I am participating in two major 5-year-long studies with the Karolinska Institute involving thousands of people in heavy industry and people on long-term sick leave because of stress and burnout.

The media have been very active in their coverage of Kundalini Yoga in Sweden. Back in 1996, there was a ten week series with Kundalini Yoga on TV. I have appeared several times on radio, and national and local TV, and since 1996 there has been more than 50 newspaper and magazine articles about my work with Kundalini Yoga.

Of all things focusing on Kundalini Yoga in Sweden these last five years, I would say the most amazing was when I got a call from the medical college in the Karolinska Institute in November 2000. They are responsible for educating most of the medical doctors in Sweden, and they asked if I was interested in lecturing about Kundalini Yoga for the new doctors-to-be.

So on December 13, 2000, for the first time ever in Scandinavia, some 30 students at the medical college, in their final semester of medical training, both in theory and practice got to learn about Kundalinin Yoga. I led them through a short spinal set sitting on chairs, and they just loved the yoga. Afterwards, the organizers said they wanted me to come back again in the spring.

Kundalini Yoga really is an incredible science, so easily accessible for so many people. I see the results everyday. As stress relief, Kundalini Yoga really is amazing. My students and patients come to me with calm serene faces and tell me how their regular practice makes them stronger
